umm...whats shell pyramiding?

Ok, Steve are you talking about the type of pyramiding from too much protein, the deformity, or are you talking about them stacking up and possibly escaping?? I noticed that the water level is a bit high and with them stacking up one could easily crawl over the other to get out. I also noticed what appears to be a window directly behind the tank... if that is so, I'd move them away from it.

Carol, you're right about the climbing too, I was just concentrating on the shell area. The "Stack to Freedom" plan is well documented too.

I have to say that they look WAY too close to the top there. One of my res climbed up on the other and got out of the tank last week. They'd NEVER been interested in getting out before so I wasn't at all worried until it happened. Lower the water a bit or put a screen top on there.

The shell naturally is supposed to be smooth, even with our turtle's shell features (ie. different type of marking designs). However, when oshell look raised at each section, it's a sign of pyramiding. In example, the sections become to raise like building blocks, while the outer shell stays flat. Atleast, this is to my understanding from information from another turtle exclusive forum.

Ok, some how I thought it was more of a pyramid effect to the shell where it was raised at the spine and not each individual scute. Either way, I still don't see how Steve picked up on that in that picture. Guess my eyes just aren't trained to see it yet

i've seen alot of shells... where the scute has grown should be smoother. in the picture, there are several small ridges indicated by where the light is reflecting. so each scute has several of these ridges expanding outward, looking like a pyramid. the raised spine should only be obvious in juveniles.

I like how they are stacked up on top of each other!

oh no... that sounds like my turtles may have pyramiding.. when does the spine disappear so to speak?? Mine still have that ridge down their backs.. and they are a bit over a year old.

Ohhh I still hope mine is a juvenile. It also sounds like mine has pyramiding too.
