My money situation is low right now too. I might need to get a better job and not just pillage my savings.

So lets sum this up. How much money would I need total. I can probably use the tank I have now as a feeding tank, now that I think about it. I would need rocks, a new filtration system, a new water heater, a better bulb, and then of course, the turtle. How much should I save up before getting into this?

I currently have about $28 (US) put away for my turtle. Everyday, aside from weekends for the most part, I put away $7 each day. How much should I save?

Yeah you are quite low for a turtle fund.

Tank could cost anywhere from 40-100$ for a 50-60 Gal on Craigslist.com

Turtle themself as babys sell for about 10-25$ depending on size.

Heaters are like 10$

Filteration can be anywhere from 30-120$

Turtle Food + fish is about 5$ and rouphly 10-25 cents per fish at fish stores. I buy 35 Fish for 6$

I dont really have to worry about the food. I can always buy feeder fish for 12 cents at my local aqua mart.

Peva: If you are going to get a RES it's best to get the biggest tank you can get from the start. This will save on costs later. RES grow VERY fast. Charlotte is only 3 months old and she's already 2''. When I first got her I had her in a 50gal tank, which she quickly outgrew. So I went on craigslist and found many large tanks for cheap. Now she's in a 100gal and MUCH happier :)

Getting a big tank though requires a big space, and with all the water it can be quite heavy, so make sure you have something sturdy to support it :)

I might just have it on the floor, kinda droll but hey.

And whats the max size of a tank so i never have to buy a new one if its a male RES?

Another tank to look out for is the Reef tanks... these are harder to find but amazing for turts!

Reef tanks are very very tall compared to standard tanks... usually tanks come in 3 sizes long, tall, and standard... pretty obvious to tell what each are...lol

Reef tanks or commonly called column tanks are much higher than "tall" tanks and make a huge difference in how much actual space the turtles have to swim in.

Take mine for example. mine is 30x18x30 or 70 gallons! now if you shave off 6 inches off the top of this tank for the basking area to 30x18x24 you get 56 gallons of swimming room

The standard 75 gallon tank is 48x18x20 if you shave 6 inches off the top of this one for a basking area or 48x18x14 you only get 52 gallons of swimming room.

You get more swimming room in a SMALLER TANK!

Now my column tank is actually on the small side for height some reach 36 plus inches... not only do these tanks provide more swimming room for your turts in the same cubic space, they make amazing displays and take up far less floor space!

So keep an eye out for them as well. Now that i have tried one i am never going back when buying a new tank...

I know petco, pet supplies plus, and pet smart all carry the 56 gallon column tanks in stock for decent prices. I have seen tank and stand combos go for about 165 to 250 depending on brand.

here is a 46 gallon 20x18x30

And a 56 gallon 30x18x24 these are the 2 most popular sizes

I agree but if you are sizing your tanks right you would never use a 46 column for any RES because the chances of haveing a RES less than 5 inches is very slim...

They are great for the smaller aquatic turtle breeds though, I have a friend with a small eastern painted turtle fully grown at just over 4 inches in one and loves it.

The 56 column tank will be fine for a male but its still not optimal!

I would shoot for the 70 gallon column or bigger for a RES male like i said its more physical swimming room than the standard 75 gallon tank so calculate your size tank right here on this website under the habitat section, take off the space needed for basking and give them as much swimming room as you can afford.

The point of the water is to keep your turtle active... if you keep your turt in little water they aren't going to be moving about and will not be healthy and active... you could have a 300gallon tank... if it only has 6 inches of water in it it's pointless. The turtle walking on the bottom of a tank does nothing really physically for them... The more they swim the stronger and better off they will be.

So be smart don't shove your turtle in a 50 foot pvc pipe just because it fits the gallon requirements lol. Use some common sense when buying your friend a new home.

Just from what I've seen so far between the two different style tanks the turtles in the column tank are for more active racing from the top to the bottom all day. The wide tank gives them plenty of room to swim too don't get me wrong they just don't seem to be as active because they are just going from one side to the other without much "diving room".
